The 9th National Science and Engineering Fair 2024, organized by the Ministry of Education for all STEM centers across Ethiopia, took place at AASTU from November 11-15. More than 200 participants from various STEM centers across the country competed in this prestigious event. Yonatan Afework, a student from Holy Angels School representing the ASTU-STEM Center, emerged as the winner by presenting an innovative project titled “IoT-Assisted Vertical Feed Producing Machine.”
Yonatan was awarded an HP Core i7 laptop by the Ministry of Education for his outstanding achievement. His project incorporates advanced IoT technologies into feed production, enabling real-time monitoring, automation, and precision control. With sensors measuring ingredient levels, temperature, and moisture, along with predictive maintenance capabilities, the machine ensures consistent feed quality while minimizing downtime. IoT platforms and cloud integration empower operators to manage and analyze data remotely, enhancing efficiency and traceability. This cutting-edge solution benefits livestock farming by offering tailored feed formulations, reducing resource wastage, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The ASTU-STEM Center played a pivotal role in Yonatan's success by providing regular training sessions every Saturday and Sunday. This achievement reflects the unwavering dedication of key mentors, including Dr. Lemma Beressa (Vice President for Research & Technology Transfer), Dr. Dereje Regassa (Director of the ASTU Community Engagement Directorate), Mr. Hinsermu Alemayehu (Coordinator of the ASTU-STEM Center), and STEM Academic and Research Assistants Mr. Tulu Megersa and Mr. Abdi Kasim. Their collective efforts were instrumental in shaping this remarkable success.
