Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), through its Community Engagement Directorate, organized a transformative digital literacy training program from March 28–29, 2025. The training aimed to build fundamental digital competence, enhance operational efficiency, promote cyber-security awareness, facilitate the adoption of digital systems, support professional development, and align with the nation's strategic goals.
Over the two-day program, participants gained essential digital skills, including proficiency in e-government services, digital communication platforms, data management, cyber-security, and productivity software. Held at the ASTU ICT Center, the training was led by experts from the College of Electrical Engineering and Computing, specifically the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. This hands-on approach provided participants with practical experience using the latest digital tools.
The session was officially opened by Dr. Dereje Regassa, Director of Community Engagement at ASTU. In his welcome address, Dr. Dereje emphasized that the success of this program marks a significant milestone in modernizing the city’s civil service. By strengthening digital skills, the initiative empowers civil servants to deliver more efficient, accessible, and responsive public services. He highlighted that this training is an integral part of the university’s broader commitment to community engagement, supporting the development of a smart city with enhanced economic, social, educational, and infrastructural growth.
During the discussion session at the end of the training, participants expressed increased confidence in using digital tools essential for their daily work. They also shared their enthusiasm for applying these skills to improve service delivery to citizens.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Dereje stated that plans to offer additional digital literacy training sessions for city employees in the future. As Adama City embraces digital transformation, such initiatives are crucial in equipping public servants with the skills needed to succeed in a technology-driven environment. He further emphasized that the collaboration between ASTU and the Adama City Administration lays the foundation for a more efficient and digitally proficient workforce, prepared to meet the demands of the future.
